Frequently asked questions

What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax is a single indirect tax levied on the supply of most goods and services in India, replacing a range of earlier central and state taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty with one unified tax structure.

What are the standard GST slab rates in India?

The main slabs are 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, with different categories of goods and services assigned to different slabs depending on whether they're considered essential, standard, or luxury/sin items.

What is the difference between 'Add GST' and 'Remove GST' mode?

Add GST starts from a base price that excludes tax and calculates the total a buyer pays including GST. Remove GST does the reverse — it starts from a final price that already includes GST and works backward to find the original base price and the tax portion within it.

Why can't I just multiply the inclusive price by the GST rate to find the tax?

Because the GST rate applies to the base price, not the inclusive price. Multiplying the final inclusive price directly by the rate overstates the tax — the correct approach divides the inclusive price by (1 + rate) first to recover the base price, then calculates the difference.
