Room rent capping is one of the most common areas where policies quietly limit your payout — many older or cheaper policies cap room rent at 1-2% of the sum insured per day, and if you choose a room above that cap, several other charges get proportionately reduced too, not just the room rent itself. Look for policies with no room rent capping, or a generous single private room allowance.
Waiting periods matter just as much as coverage amount: most policies have a waiting period for pre-existing conditions (commonly 2-4 years) and specific waiting periods for certain treatments, so buying a policy years before you might need it is genuinely valuable, not just theoretical.
Also worth checking: whether the policy covers day-care procedures that don't require a 24-hour hospital stay, whether it includes an unlimited or high annual restoration of sum insured if you exhaust it within the year, and the insurer's claim settlement ratio, which reflects how reliably they've actually paid out claims historically.
