"Future Cost of Today's Amount" answers: if something costs a certain amount today, what will an equivalent purchase cost after a number of years at a given inflation rate? This is useful for goal planning — figuring out what a child's education or a retirement lifestyle will actually cost in future rupees, not today's rupees.
"Today's Value of a Future Amount" answers the reverse: if you're set to receive or need a certain amount at a future date, what is that really worth in today's purchasing power? This is useful for evaluating whether a future payout, like an insurance maturity value or a fixed pension, will actually retain meaningful value by the time you receive it.
Why the CPI number often understates what inflation feels like
Official CPI inflation is a weighted average across a broad basket of goods and services designed to represent a typical household's spending. But your actual spending pattern may be weighted quite differently — if a larger share of your spending goes toward categories that have historically inflated faster than the headline average, like private education, healthcare, or urban rent, your personal cost-of-living increase can run meaningfully above the official CPI figure.
This is why using a single flat CPI number for every planning purpose can understate the real future cost of goals like children's education, which has historically outpaced general CPI in India by a meaningful margin. It's worth using a higher assumed rate specifically for goals in categories known to inflate faster, rather than applying the general CPI figure uniformly across every calculation.
A worked example showing why the gap compounds
Take ₹10,00,000 as today's cost of a specific goal, projected 15 years forward. At a general 6% CPI assumption, the future cost comes to roughly ₹24 lakh. If the actual relevant category (say, private higher education) has historically inflated closer to 10% annually, the same goal's future cost comes to roughly ₹41.8 lakh instead — a difference of nearly ₹18 lakh purely from using a more category-appropriate inflation assumption instead of the general CPI figure.
This gap is exactly why it's worth pausing before defaulting to a single "safe" inflation rate for every goal — a retirement lifestyle goal, a child's education goal, and a general savings goal may each deserve a different assumed rate based on what they're actually made up of.
Using the reverse mode to sanity-check a future payout
If you're evaluating an insurance policy, annuity, or fixed-return investment promising a specific payout at a future date, running that future amount through "Today's Value of a Future Amount" mode shows what it's genuinely worth in today's terms — a useful reality check against a headline number that can look impressive in nominal terms but underwhelming once inflation is accounted for.
A ₹50 lakh maturity value promised 20 years from now sounds substantial today, but at 6% assumed inflation, it's worth roughly ₹15.6 lakh in today's purchasing power — a very different number to actually plan around, and worth checking before treating a large future figure as more valuable than it will actually feel by the time it arrives.
Common mistakes when using an inflation calculator
Applying one flat rate to every goal. Different spending categories inflate at different rates — a single general CPI assumption applied to education, healthcare, and general living costs alike can meaningfully misstate at least some of those goals.
Treating the projection as precise rather than directional. Inflation rates fluctuate year to year and can't be predicted with certainty over a 15–30 year horizon — the calculator's output is a reasonable planning estimate, not a guaranteed figure.
Ignoring inflation entirely when evaluating a future payout. A large nominal future amount can look far more attractive than it actually is once its real, inflation-adjusted value is considered — always run a future figure through the reverse mode before treating it as sufficient for a goal.
